Ten Tors Walk

Our annual Ten Tors walk across Bodmin Moor each May is  an event used to help other groups to raise money for themselves. We charge a fee for teams of four people to enter, they can then raise money for their own good causes.

For this fee the Lions mark and marshal the route across the moor, provide drinking water at points along the route and with the help of Cornwall Search and Rescue provide First aid and evacuation if needed.

The event was started in 1981 by Lion Gerald Worden and Alistair Pellow. That first year the route was marked by wooden stakes with cut up plastic bags attached. These were all driven in by hand, quite a hard days work. The event raised just under £2,500. The 2007 walk raised well over £20,000.

In May 2008 we introduced a new route to include Brown Willy (the highest point in Cornwall), the new route starts & finishes at St Breward football club.

Ten Tors 2011 was our 30th Walk

After 30 years this walk has covered enough ground to go round the world 4 times and climb 3000 miles. In the wind this year, at times it felt almost as if it was all in this one year.

Whilst the Lions Club organizes this event, it’s the walkers who make it happen and determine where the funds go. This year 270 intrepid souls set out in dry, bright but extremely windy conditions to tackle 13 challenging miles. The fastest finished in just over two hours whilst possibly the bravest was by a guided blind person in just over seven hours. The very strong winds, in excess of 40 mph, must have made the strongest struggle, all but 11 completed the course to raise an estimated £24600 for their chosen charities. The Lions Club would like to thank the Bodmin Moor landowners and commoners, St. Breward Football Club and all who took part.
